In spring 2023, community leaders recognized the urgency to address rising concerns about youth substance use and adult overdose rates.
Launched in September 2023, the coalition brings together diverse community sectors to tackle these issues head-on. Their mission focuses on enhancing community health education and awareness, particularly in areas of criminal justice, mental health, and substance misuse.
A significant milestone was achieved in September 2024 when the coalition secured the prestigious Drug Free Communities (DFC) Grant. This federal program, overseen by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, empowers local communities to prevent youth substance use. With this support, the Putnam County Health and Wellness Coalition is now poised to implement evidence-based strategies for substance use prevention and mental health promotion, targeting youth aged 12-18.
